In-conduit hydroelectric renewable power generation offers a unique opportunity for water agencies to increase the efficiency of their system through the recovery of wasted energy. As over-pressurization occurs at various points along a water transmission or distribution system, excess pressure is released from the system through a network of pressure reduction valves (PRVs). PRVs expel excess pressure, in the form of heat and noise, into the atmosphere in order to prevent over-pressurization and protect the overall integrity of the water system. Unfortunately, PRVs do not perform useful work with the energy they remove from the system. In-conduit hydroelectric power generation harnesses this un-tapped energy from water systems that is normally wasted. Pressurized water running through a pipeline system is channeled through an in-conduit hydroelectric turbine, coupled with a generator, which ultimately produces renewable electricity.
