ABOUT US

Global Youth Connection or GYC is the first web-based microfinance platform that connects youth to youth.

++What will your venture address? Why is it an important issue?
Traditionally, non-profit organizations and microfinance institutions have not targeted young persons aged 15 to 24 years. In 2005, the World Bank reported a 60 percent drop in primary to middle school enrollment in developing countries, leaving youth to seek other forms of generating income. We believe young people to be the most creative, innovative and entrepreneurial members of any society. It is for these reasons that we created GYC. GYC is the first global microfinance initiative solely focused on empowering young entrepreneurs in developing countries.

++ Why are YOU pursuing this specific issue? Tell us why you're passionate and qualified!
All GYC members are either from developing countries or have travelled extensively. We have seen first hand many of the opportunities that are not available to young persons. Young entrepreneurs in developing countries are often neglected and conscious youth are becoming increasingly aware of this negligence. We want to give these young people the opportunities to pursue their goals. We have been working directly with faculty advisers, professionals, and microfinance institutions to develop our idea.

++How will your venture address this issue? Help us understand what you do and how it helps.
GYC will provide young entrepreneurs from age 15 to 24 with financial services, primarily loans, to support their entrepreneurial interests. Most youth in developing countries choose to work in the formal or informal sector to support themselves and their family. Our venture will address this idea by facilitating dialogue between young persons and young entrepreneurs through our web platform. This platform will enable donors to create their own personal profile, browse the profiles of the young entrepreneurs and choose the project that they would like to support. Donors will receive their money back over time and the MFIs will retain the interest marked on the loan.
