ABOUT US

The Aspen Institute's 2010 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition is structured in three rounds.

Round One
Each of the twenty-five participating schools hosts an on-campus competition, from April 9th-12th.

Participating business schools generate excitement about the competition on campus and encourage student teams to sign up.

In the past, schools have had anywhere from three to thirty on-campus teams, consisting of four students per team.

A new or significantly re-worked MBA case study is made available to all student teams on Friday, April 9th. The case study, in its current form, will have never been taught or distributed before the competition to assure fairness.

Student teams respond to the case (see rules) by 9:00 am local time on the morning of Monday, April 12th, to the designated campus point person.

Schools are responsible for designing a process for fairly judging the student team responses on their campus. For example, some schools choose faculty judges, some organize alumni judging panels, and some allow student clubs, such as a Net Impact chapter, to orchestrate the judging.

By 5:00 pm local time on Friday, April 16th, schools should report the names of the students on the first place campus team, as well as their written response to the case study.

All first place teams will receive recognition on the website of the 2010 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition and a trophy recognizing their accomplishment. Schools may separately recognize their student participants in different ways.

Round Two
Two senior academic advisors of the Aspen Institute will review all written responses by the twenty-five first place on-campus teams. This review will take place from April 17th-22nd.

All written responses will be stripped of school name, to assure an unbiased review.
Responses will be assessed quantitatively in a number of categories, including clarity, creativity, and thoroughness in responding to all questions posed in the case study. These marks will be summed for both advisors, combined, and then the responses will be ranked by point total.

The top five student teams will be notified immediately and transportation arrangements will be made for them to attend the final round of the case competition, scheduled for Friday, April 30th, in New York City. The top five school names will also be posted on this website.

Round Three
On April 30th, the five finalist teams will present their ideas- through both their previously written submission for Round One as well as a PowerPoint presentation- to a panel of esteemed judges.

While judges deliberate, students will meet corporate, philanthropic, and other friends of the Aspen Institute over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

The 2010 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition prize purse totals $40,000:

First Place (Grand Prize) receives $20,000 and $3,000 to donate to a 501(c)(3) charity of their choice

Second Place receives $10,000

Third Place receives $5,000

Other teams each receive $1,000

All finalist teams receive commemorative trophies.

Primary transportation and hotel costs for the five finalist teams will be paid for by the Aspen Institute.
